The Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava, which includes the Theatre Faculty, in which we can talk about the Theatre Studio itself or otherwise Lab Theater, was founded in 1949 and since its beginning has tried to educate quality creative artists. The Theatre Faculty together with the Music and Dance Faculty were the first two faculties of the Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU), which started to operate under these names in 1953. Later in 1990, the Film and Television Faculty joined them.

Since the founding of the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts (1949), its students have been playing in various spaces. The first ever theatrical studio arose on the initiative of listeners in 1998. At that time it worked under the name Štúdio Kaplnka in the premises of the Chapel of the Academy Istropolitana, where the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts was based. In 2007, after the opening of the new building of Slovak National Theatre, the Theatre studio moved to the vacant premises of the Small Stage. Along with the change of space, Štúdio Kaplnka changed its name to the Small Stage of VŠMU.

But after three seasons it moved again. This time to its own premises in the new building of the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts. And again it changed its name to the current Lab Theatre. The new theatre studio began its first season in 2010.
