1425 – that’s the number of days the siege of Sarajevo lasted in the Yugoslav War at the end of the last century. While in our country the change of the socialist regime began with “Velvet” and ended with a friendly break with the Czech Republic, in Yugoslavia Slavic fraternal relations cracked more than anyone would expect. Tito’s death, economic problems, and especially strong nationalism have led not only to the disintegration of the country, but also to violence, ethnic cleansing and ultimately to war. Who was to blame and what was the stance of the Western countries? An almost unanswerable question whose vague answer remains in the people there today and leaves them with bitterness and a sense of injustice.

Our aim is not to offer an answer, but to ask. How could this even happen? How could the locals manage it? How did it affect them? What do we actually know and want to know about this war? Above all – what can we do to prevent history from repeating in the Balkans or elsewhere? In our search we focus on a particular event, a specific city – Sarajevo, the former symbol of multiethnicity and variety of life. Former Olympic city in war full of heroic stories of those who, despite a difficult test, wanted to maintain their pride, humanity and hope.
